Why You Should Write a Book in June
This month for the A to Z challenge, I’m highlighting twenty-six reasons (alphabetically, of course) why you should write a book in June.
JuNoWriMo is our spin off of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) that takes place in June, challenging you to write 50,000 words in thirty days. In the past two years, JuNoWriMo has inspired hundreds of writers to get their books written, and I’ve asked a few of them to share their personal stories. Today Angi Black sums up her experience in one word: Xanthic.
Why should you write a book in June? THIS is why.
X is for Xanthic by Angi Black
That’s right. Xanthic. It means yellow. And yellow makes me happy. And that’s what JuNoWriMo does for me.
I thought long and hard about what X word I could use. I was going to be cute with things like X-cellant, X-traordinary, and X-citing. But that felt like cheating. I was going to use xylophone because it’s such a weird instrument but it can make beautiful music – kinda like a writer trying to cobble a story together in thirty days. Complete chaos making art.
But in the end, I think Xanthic sums it up.
- JuNoWriMo takes place in June which is full of sunshine – which grade school children often represent with the wonderful yellow crayon.
- I’ve hit my 50K goal every year I’ve participated and crossing that line is like the first day of sun after a long cold winter.
- I lead sprints for JuNoWriMo and on my calendar, the times pop up in yellow.
- Yellow is hopeful and happy. There’s a reason Little Miss Sunshine is yellow and not blue or pink or red.
So there you have it. But the best word to describe this crazy month I can think of doesn’t start with X, it starts with C – community. JuNoWriMo is a community of supporters, fellow writers, and a-little-bit-crazy goal-getters like you. You’re all working toward a common goal. You’re all cheering each other on, whether you hit five words or your 50K and beyond, it doesn’t matter. You’re all there to make something, create something, and build each other up.
And if that doesn’t feel like warm, xanthic sunshine on your face, then nothing will.
It’s Your Turn
JuNoWriMo 2014 is going to be bigger and better than ever, so don’t miss this opportunity to write that book. I dare you to write 50,000 words in June. If you accept my challenge, know that you won’t be in it alone. You’ll be writing alongside hundreds of other authors who are going for the exact same thing, and that’s the best way to write. It’s gonna be stinkin’ awesome.
Oh, and one more thing. JuNoWriMo is having a giveaway right now: sign up and you just might win a prize!

Sounds like fun. Nano has become so large. I wish I had the time. I’m overwhelmed right now, but perhaps next year. Thanks for writing about it–I hadn’t heard of it before. 🙂
JuNoWriMo is super fun. I understand about being busy. Hopefully we’ll see you next year. 🙂
