Why You Should Write a Book in June
This month for the A to Z challenge, I’m highlighting twenty-six reasons (alphabetically, of course) why you should write a book in June.
JuNoWriMo is our spin off of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) that takes place in June, challenging you to write 50,000 words in thirty days. In the past two years, JuNoWriMo has inspired hundreds of writers to get their books written, including myself. June is the perfect month to stop procrastinating and get that book written.
Why should you write a book in June? Here’s one reason.
Q is for Quicker
I wrote my first book in nine months. It was as long and as grueling a process as a pregnancy, and in many ways writing a book is like growing a child. My second book took at least that long, maybe over a year with the writing ADD I had going on at the time. But when I first participated in a 30 day novel writing challenge, I was able to write the entire first draft of my book in under a month.
Since then, I’ve written the equivalent of four other full-length novels, each during what I call a “writing month” – June or November. Each time I’ve surpassed the 50,000 words in fewer than thirty days. My best ever was completing one of my books at 56,000 words in twenty-six days.
Twenty-six days! When I think of how long I piddled around getting those first two books written, it still exhausts me. And I know that if I tried writing a book in any other month (all by my lonesome), it would take me around nine months again. I just don’t have that level of self-dedication to focus on a project that intensely unless I have the accountability of others. So no matter how busy I am, I make a point to take advantage of NaNoWriMo and JuNoWriMo to get my books written, because for me, it’s the quicker way.
It’s Your Turn
JuNoWriMo 2014 is going to be bigger and better than ever, so don’t miss this opportunity to write that book. I dare you to write 50,000 words in June. If you accept my challenge, know that you won’t be in it alone. You’ll be writing alongside hundreds of other authors who are going for the exact same thing, and that’s the best way to write. It’s gonna be stinkin’ awesome.
