Why You Should Write a Book in June
This month for the A to Z challenge, I’m highlighting twenty-six reasons (alphabetically, of course) why you should write a book in June.
JuNoWriMo is our spin off of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) that takes place in June, challenging you to write 50,000 words in thirty days. In the past two years, JuNoWriMo has inspired hundreds of writers to get their books written, including myself. June is the perfect month to stop procrastinating and get that book written.
Why should you write a book in June? Here’s one reason.
K is for Kinship
No man is an island.
We’ve all heard that phrase before. But sometimes we isolate ourselves. Writers are often hermits, locking themselves away into a cave someplace where they can pound out those words, uninterrupted. I’d guess that most of us are guilty of shutting others out of our lives at one time or another.
Without a doubt, there’s something to be said for periods of solitude. I need my alone time to focus on my work without being disturbed – a lot of it. But it’s also important not to ignore the need for kinship with others.
JuNoWriMo is a great opportunity for making those kinds of connections with other writers.
You might think you’re working just fine on your own right now, but until you surround yourself with a group of like-minded people, you’ll never know how your productivity might soar. You might spark a brilliant new idea from a discussion. You might get encouraged about a problem area in your book. You might be inspired to team up and start a collaborative venture with one of your buddies (which is, ahem, exactly how JuNoWriMo began). You might even find that someone you know has a key contact that could work in your favor later on. I have been encouraged and inspired by my awesome group of JuNoWriMo friends, and I want you to experience that, too.
It’s okay to have your sacred alone time. But try going inland once and a while, too. In other words, don’t be an island – be a peninsula. Accept the kinship of other writers.
It’s Your Turn
JuNoWriMo 2014 is going to be bigger and better than ever, so don’t miss this opportunity to write that book. I dare you to write 50,000 words in June. If you accept my challenge, know that you won’t be in it alone. You’ll be writing alongside hundreds of other authors who are going for the exact same thing, and that’s the best way to write. It’s gonna be stinkin’ awesome.

I never joined these ‘write a book in a month’. Too much pressure. I’m a slow writer…
Cathrina,
It’s not for everyone. Personally, I need the pressure. Without some kind of accountability my writing momentum fizzles out. These types of challenges energize me.
Thanks for stopping by!
Hey. I can’t remember if I’ve ever done JuNoWriMo, but this wouldn’t be a good year for it, as I’ll be at the Young Gunns workshop for the first two weeks of June, critiquing and working on revising a short story. Best luck with it though, and great to meet you!
Chris,
Sounds like you have other awesome things planned for June. Thanks so much for stopping by, and good luck with your projects!
I was literally just thinking of the June Nano because it’s going on in April too for Camp Nano. I just listened to a conference recording about fast drafting a novel in two weeks. That sounds pretty intense, but a month I can definitely do.
I live for the novel-in-a-months, otherwise it would take me forever to get anything written. Thanks for stopping by, Stephanie!
I need pressure! The A-Z is perfect for me. A deadline, delicious! I wonder if there is an equivalent for poets? 50,000 words – I probably won’t write that many in poems for the rest of my life, my writing is quite spare! I would like another A-z in May, June, July… or maybe every other month to get me actually writing though. It’s great to feel in competition too, you try harder to be better!

I love your attitude, Liz. Delicious deadlines. 🙂 Sounds like we’re quite similar. Hopefully you’ll join us in June.
