Why You Should Write a Book in June
This month for the A to Z challenge, I’m highlighting twenty-six reasons (alphabetically, of course) why you should write a book in June.
JuNoWriMo is our spin off of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) that takes place in June, challenging you to write 50,000 words in thirty days. In the past two years, JuNoWriMo has inspired hundreds of writers to get their books written, and I’ve asked a few of them to share their personal stories. Today Carlyle Labuschagne sums up her experience in one word: Adept.
Why should you write a book in June? THIS is why.

A is for Adept by Carlyle Labuschagne
When Becca invited me to join this challenge I happily accepted, as I feel every writer can only benefit with joining JuNoWriMo.
My word for the challenge is Adept.
As any writer feels, writing is the best thing they could have done with their lives. True. The extent of this is beyond measure. Joining such challenges as JuNoWriMo even as a published author is exactly what an experienced and novice writer needs to keep the spark alive. To keep growing as a writer one must always seek skill developing challenges. JuNoWriMo brings forth many gifts. Did you ever think you could write a novel in a month, well here is where to start. Even if you do not complete the challenge, trust me you would have gained more than you thought possible just by being a part of the program and giving it your all. Why I chose the word Adept, well that is how the challenge made me feel, I not only produced a big chunk of a manuscript, but by being part of the movement I gained knowledge and skills to feel confident and well equipped and capable as a writer working her way towards her next novel.
With JuNoWriMo I discovered a community of skillfully talented writers with the same crazy and enthusiastic passions I house for my characters, my world building and my story. If at any time I feel stuck or doubtful about my plot or a sentence structure, or even when I am very behind on my daily word count – I can reach out to any of my community or writing buddies within the program to bump me back onto my path of word counting madness, in achieving my dash towards my goals. The best and fastest way to racking up your ‘adeptness’ points is by joining an adventure of novel writing as a group challenge.

JuNoWriMo 2014 is going to be bigger and better than ever, so don’t miss this opportunity to write that book. I dare you to write 50,000 words in June. If you accept my challenge, know that you won’t be in it alone. You’ll be writing alongside hundreds of other authors who are going for the exact same thing, and that’s the best way to write. It’s gonna be stinkin’ awesome.

So the first blog I visited for the A-Z challenge didn’t have a post up (it’s early in the day) and then this, my second site, has a challenge I can’t complete! My first response was, ugh, I’d love to write a book in June, and I am working every day on a book, but June is the worst possible month for me to commit to something…..So….Never mind. I am going to commit to something in June thanks to you. I probably can’t get 50,000 words in, but I can promise myself that even with everything else going on in June, I *will* work on my book every day, at least a little bit.
Thank you!
Rory – you can’t compete, but you will anyway? Ha ha, guess we have some pretty strong powers of motivation then. 🙂
I totally get that some months are more busy than others, and I’m sorry June’s one of those for you. But I’m happy that you’re going to try it anyway. Even if you don’t make the 50K, if JuNoWriMo can inspire you to get more words written than you would have normally, it’s still a win, right? Good luck!
My best friend is finally able to legally marry to love of his life in June, and I’m playing a major role in the wedding, and my kids are off school and I decided to skip signing them up for camps to hang out with them, and my big sister’s turning 40 and graduating from law school, so June’s a good, very lucky busy. 🙂 But I will add writing every day to the deal.
Thanks!
Sounds like a fun challenge. 🙂 June I have to teach summer school, so I can’t participate…. but good luck to all participants!

Alex – sorry you can’t join in. Tell your friends and any writers you know. Maybe next time.
Thanks for stopping by!
Alright. I’m signing up.
I’ve got a zillion excuses that month (visiting family, enrolling in grad school) but writing doesn’t get done with excuses. It gets done when you sit down and do it, no matter how busy life gets.
Right now editing a novel I wrote last year– am thinking I’d love to pound out its sequel come June. If not that, there are other ideas in the works…
thanks for this.
Awesome! I’m so glad you’re joining in, Raquel. You are so right about excuses.
I’m currently editing a novel, too, frantically trying to get it done before June.
See you in a couple of months! 🙂
Usually, I do a very informal MarNoWriMo since there are no major holidays, birthdays, or any other kind of special days and there are 31 days in the month. Feels a bit like cheating, but I rarely only write 50K in a month. However, I’m going to join you! Whoot!
MarNoWriMo, or whatever works! I’m so glad you’re joining us for June. Welcome to the club!
